In a population of 200 million people, how scary can it be if 3o% are said to suffer from mental illness, that is a staggering figure of sixty million people according to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Abdulaziz Abdullahi who made the statement at the Mental Health Action Committee and Stakeholders’ Workshop in Abuja on Monday.
Although to an average Nigerian because of lack of awareness and misconceptions, mental illness is classified as ‘madness’. Meaning you have to show some specific traits like: having rough and untidy hair, walking in public without clothes on and if with clothes, they will be smelly and dirty but in this case Mr Abdullaziz went further to clarify the types of mental illness which includes: Depression, bipolar effective disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses, dementia, intellectual disabilities and developmental disorders including autism.
Another factor that could have contributed to the huge figure according to the Nigeria Ministry of health is the current economic situation in the country, which is believed to be linked to the recent surge in the number of people committing suicide most especially in Lagos.
Nigerians are strong minded people naturally but with the rate people are complaining of hardship in recent times there is need to do something about it before the figure increases and Nigeria becomes an unsafe country to travel to and other countries will tag Nigeria as a mad country with mad people and shut their borders to prevent Nigerians from coming in.
